NEWS : A NEW GROUP HAS ORGANIZED TO HELP OUR SCHOOL

A meeting was held at 4 PM in the Library at the Doris Robinson Primary School on Saturday, January 22, 2000. The purpose of this meeting was to explain the purpose and benefits of organizing a group to be called "FRIENDS OF THE DORIS ROBINSON PRIMARY SCHOOL."45 Adults attended and 25 children.

meeting had excellent attendence

First the classrooms were opened for viewing with the teachers present to answer questions. In the computer room all 7 computers were running with examples of programs that the children use. There was a child at each computer running a program. One computer had the internet connected due to the help of Cable and Wireless. The web page for the school was brought up on the screen and this web page can be seen all over the world. In the future the pictures will be changed and work shown of individual students. A wish list of what is needed is on this web page, pictures of the students and their teachers.

The meeting was started with a reading of a scripture, a song, and a prayer led by three students. Everyone attending was registered and given a ticket for a drawing to give away a bushel basket of food and prizes.

A display at the front of the room had names of all the jobs, trades, professions etc. that each of the children could achieve one of these, if they receive the help of the community.

The moderator, Dale Witt (Mama Witt) welcomed the teachers, the DC, the children, and those attending. It was explained that this idea was presented and recommenced by Mr. John Cartwright, a consultant in Education facilities and organization. He was employed by the UK by t he TCI government to go to all the schools and analyze. Because there are few parents that can attend or assist with the PTA here on Middle Caicos , he suggested the Friends of the School. He said it had been tried on some of the other islands and had been a success. Not only did it allow more people to become interested then the immediate parents or grandparents. In addition it gave a way to appeal for outside help either government or private individuals.

The meeting was not held to ask for money contributions but for volunteers to assist the teachers and help the children with after school activities. These can be: Read to the children, teach them how to fish, how to plait, how to draw, and share the knowledge that many of the adults have learned The teachers from time to time also need someone to stay with a class if they have to be elsewhere or direct games in the playground.

In addition to the above this organization can help as a group to ask for government funds when they are available. They can keep in touch with the Education Department as to the needs of the school and the children. In addition to the resident members others can be part of this organization. The Friends of the Doris Robinson Primary School will provide a way for them to donate items to the school and an address to use to send them.

With as many people involved as possible the children should receive the kind of help that will allow them to reach their potential.
